Learning the basics of Beekeeping

Participants enjoyed an information-filled 2:30 hour session with BeesMAX at Chessington Garden Centre on the first Sunday this June. And there are more sessions planned…

Participants gathered in the garden centre and were given an introductory talk and Q&A about Beekeeping before suiting up and heading out side to learn more about the hives.

The adult participants, embarking on their own beekeeping journeys, booked on the course with a keen interest in BeeKeeping, and some looking to start their own Beekeeping journey.

More than just Beekeeping

The interactive Beekeeping experience also included an educational piece on the conservation aspects of why we need to provide homes for feral honeybee colonies that we traditionally know as bee swarms.

The introductory talk in the garden centre was followed with the donning of the necessary Beekeeping PPE and a visit and inspection of the real life hives on site.

Becoming a Bee Custodian

Whilst inspecting the hives the participants developed their learning of the environmental conservation aspect of Beekeeping and the work of BeesMAX and Tree Bee Rescue.

Participants learned about the honey production side of the traditional hobbyist’s Beekeeping ethos, and in these modern times where we need to go for environmental conservation, which is not necessarily more beekeeping but promotes more of a custodial ethos.

We need to become custodians of a natural asset and not only users of a food production process that was kicked off during the two world wards and is not being called into question and more as the environmental movement takes hold.

Starting your Beekeeping journey

Participants also learned about the potential to purchase their own bees, hive and equipment to get themselves started and help support the work of BeesMAX in protecting our bees.
